Introduction
The
Skiffhead and Tweehead (Two’s head) regattas are held over the same
weekend on the Amstel river in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The 2010
edition is held during the weekend of the 3th and 4th of April.
Both
regattas have a unique place on the calendar and are truly
international events where foreign competitors can expect a very warm
welcome. Both races are open to rowers of all ages, all standards, and
all nationalities. Juniors, Seniors and Masters compete at the same day.
The
Skiffhead is a regatta with a long standing tradition. It is a head
race for single scullers and was first held in 1951. Over the years,
the Skiffhead has been won by many great (predominantly Dutch) names of
sculling. In recent years however, the Skiffhead has twice not been won
by a Dutchman, but by silver Olympic medallist Yuri Jaanson from
Estonia.
The
Tweehead has been added in 1995, mainly to also allow oarsmen to
compete in the smallest sweep boat. Entries can be made in 2- or 2x.
The number of entries has been growing each year ever since it was
first held. The winners have mainly been members of the Dutch Olympic
team; a great challenge for rowers of all standards and from all places.
The
Skiffhead and Tweehead are held on the river Amstel. The river Amstel
is well known in rowing for its sharp bends. The 7,5km course takes
full advantage of the scenery created by Dutch land governance, which
gives it a unique changing setting from a pitoresque little village
(Ouderkerk a/d Amstel) through green fields right into the heart of
Amsterdam.
